This may only occur if we can consolidate enough hectares to make the effort cost-effective and if stands meet pre-determined criteria posted by the ministry. The following criteria have been provided by the ministry to assist in ranking opportunities for investment in aerial fertilization on the coast: Late Rotation Stands Leading Species (in priority order): Fdc, Ss/Sx, Cw/Pw, Ba, Hw Site Index (in priority order): >25, 20-25, 15-19 (no treatment for areas where SI<15 Return on Investment (ROI): >5%, 3-5%, 2-2.9% (no treatment for areas where Foresters preparing prescriptions for fertilization will also consider room for crown expansion (spaced stands are preferred), forest health, and access among other factors. Juvenile (SCHIRP) Stands Criteria have not been provided for SCHIRP stands but these areas must exhibit symptoms of the "SCHIRP" phenomenon (chlorosis, stunted growth, salal-dominated Cw and Hw areas typically on northern and NW Vancouver Island). SCHIRP areas must be assessed and prescribed by someone familiar with these symptoms. Please let me know if you have areas that meet either of these conditions that you would like to see fertilized so that I can consolidate what we have to hopefully put together a fertilization plan for later this fiscal or next fiscal. Provide me with your candidate stand details outlined above along with ha for prescription and/or treatment. We may have to do prescriptions this fiscal and treatments next fiscal depending on timing and all work is based on funding availability. If you have any areas you would like to see funded next fiscal please send your proposed areas to me for prioritization and ranking. Current eligible activities include: Spacing Fertilization Brushing Planting (backlog NSR areas) We can lobby for additional activities to become eligible for funding if we put together a case to present to the ministry (pruning for example). Let me now if you would like to see other activities become eligible and I will pass that information along through the appropriate channels. Link to Land Based Investment web site: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hcp/fia/landbase/forest-resource-productivity-and-improvement.htm I'll be sending this email to woodlot owners in the other forest districts shortly. Sorry if you receive this email twice which may occur if you own or manage more than one woodlot. Look forward to hearing from you, Jeff Sandford, NIWA LBI Coordinator J.S.
